Orthodontist vs. dentist: what’s the difference? Let Dr. Lynn Hurst, an orthodontist for 35 years now, walk you through it.
They both know a ton about teeth — but there’s a lot more to it than that.
(Spoiler alert: If you want straighter teeth, definitely go with an orthodontist.)
This video has three main parts:
1) First, Dr. Hurst defines what an orthodontist — a specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, the dental speciality that deals with teeth straightening — actually is.
2) Then, the video explains that while dentists and orthodontists both go to dental school, orthodontists have to complete a 2-3 year residency in tooth movement after that. Dr. Hurst goes into the subjects orthodontists learn during their residency.
(Dr. Hurst has actually founded three specialty residency programs in orthodontics — at UNLV, UT-San Antonio, and Roseman University of Health Sciences — so he’s definitely an expert in orthodontist training.)
3) Finally, Dr. Hurst speaks to the scarcity of orthodontists in the United States. There are over 200K general dentists, but only around 10K orthodontists.
